A True-Life Theatrical Fish Story

August 31, 2013

True story: at the beginning of this month, I was bit by a dead shark onstage after a Mad Science show, and I had to get five stitches on my right hand.  It was at the Johnson Space Center (yes, NASA’s “Houston”).  Soooooo, “Houston, we have a problem!  One of our performers was seriously injured by a dead shark and is bleeding all over the stage!”  I’ll admit, I’m not actually quoting anything that was stated verbally, though that’s more or less the phrase that ran through my head as I attempted to staunch the bleeding with paper towels before it damaged the less cleanable bits of my equipment.

Let’s tell this story properly, though, shall we?  Once upon a time, at the beginning of August, Elisa was scheduled to do eight Mad Science shows at the Johnson Space Center.  The shows were titled “Animals.  Science.  Who Knew?” and they were booked as a part of the Space Center’s “CHOMP!” exhibit.  The shows basically dealt with A) the science of animal survival and B) how animals inspire and further the cause of scientific innovation.  The Mad Science equipment included a good number of stuffed animals and puppets that were positioned around the stage, and the stage itself was decorated with quite a few skulls and jaws of various carnivorous animals.  Several of the stuffed animals and puppets were leaning against or sitting on the display logs to which the skulls and jaws were permanently affixed.  After my fourth show (the second show of the second day), I was putting equipment away, and when I went to grab a bird puppet, I bumped my hand against a shark jaw.  It was sharp, and when I felt the prick on my hand, my reflex action was to pull the hand back.  That was, in retrospect, a bad move, because the next thing I knew, I was bleeding all over the stage, my lab coat, and the shark jaw display.  I attempted to staunch the bleeding with paper towels and used a good number of bandages from my purse’s first-aid kit, called the Mad Science office to let them know what was going on, and then went to report the bio-hazard to the Space Center powers-that-be.  I wound up awkwardly filling out an incident report (neither of my hands were working very well, probably because I was in shock) and getting a map to the nearest urgent care facility, which was happily just across the street.  After driving across the street, painfully filling out even more paperwork, taking a drug test, and getting permission from the office to file for workman’s compensation, I received five stitches in my right hand.  The cuts took slightly more than three weeks to heal.  They are now scarred over (thank heaven!  That really had me worried).  Still, where I nearly took off the knuckle flesh on my pinky finger it still hurts more than I feel it should, especially when I bump the hand into something in passing.

Aaaaaand this is by far the strangest on-stage fish story I have in my arsenal, and it’s a pretty big arsenal.  This particular fish story is likely to take pride of place for the rest of my career, especially since it actually involves a fish, though it was dead at the time.  As my former room-mate said when I told her the story, “You know, Elisa, you’ve really got to watch out for those space fish.”  Who knew?  -E.G.D.

On TV in the USA!

June 13, 2013

Hi, everyone!  Now, I’ve been on TV before, but I’ll admit, the only other time I’ve been on TV in the USA was when I was a kid.  I was on TV a couple of times when I was living in Japan, in large part because foreigners are interesting to the Japanese public, especially when they enjoy ikebana, know how to tie an obi, and look cute in a yukata.  Yesterday, I officially made my adult TV debut in the good ol’ USA on behalf of Mad Science of Houston.  For those of you who don’t know me on sight, I am “Seismic Susanna,” the blonde woman in the bright green lab coat.

Isn’t that fun? I hope you enjoyed my television appearance, and if you happen to be in the Houston area, don’t forget to look up Mad Science of Houston! I do shows all over town: for schools, for birthday parties, for boy scout events, for public libraries, for IKEA’s spring break events, for Chick-Fil-A family nights… really, do you even need a reason to have a little science in your day?

Thanks for dropping by, and have a great day- E.G.D.

Delving into Dinner Theatre

March 4, 2013

Well, this is new!  Not only is my show (“Up, Up and Away“) with Mad Science going brilliantly well, but I’ve just been cast into my first dinner theatre role.   The show is called Bullets for Broadway, and it will be opening in the Houston theatre district in April.  I’ll be playing Mimi Sheraton.  If I’m remembering this correctly from auditions, she’s a wealthy gossip columnist and a thoroughly amusing character.  Anyhow, I expect I’ll be posting details later, but so far it’s looking like 2013 is a good year for me and acting ^_^.  Wheeeeeee! -E.G.D.

Why Yes, I Am Qualified to Tutor/Coach Acting

February 10, 2013

I have been so intensely focused on applying to teach collegiate theatre courses lately that it slipped my mind that I am immensely qualified to tutor and coach acting.  I taught theatre 101 during graduate school.  I have directed shows peopled entirely by people who considered themselves non-actors, as well as shows with young actors and new actors.  I am experienced in directing and/or critiquing the work of experienced old-hat actors in a way most assure me they find useful.  I have an arsenal of voice and movement techniques that has earned me a reputation as a cast-commodity, and I have many times been called upon by a director to run cast warmup routines (primarily due to my Linklater training).  I am adept with dialect breakdowns and analysis, and I have the full skill set of a dialect coach (complete with IPA).  I am a successful actor with two acting degrees.  One of them is the terminal degree for an actor.  Heck, why not?  Until that professorship rolls around, I should probably keep flexing my teacher muscles!  Is anyone out there in the Houston area looking for an acting coach?  Please don’t hesitate to let me know!  -E.G.D.

Fun Times with Graphic Design

Beach Treasures and Treasure Beaches (logo art by me, logo text by Kristie McLin)

As I hope you can tell from this website, I am a pretty competent web-builder and graphic designer.  Today, my mom pointed out the fact that wordpress has taken note of this, too!  I built (and still webmaster) my mother’s website Beach Treasures and Treasure Beaches, and wordpress apparently is using the site as an example of how well the Andreas09 template can be used… with about 18 hours worth of CSS manipulation, a good logo, and a seriously awesome photo or twenty.  Part of me is flattered (they refer to the website as “gorgeous,” after all) and the other part of me is a bit irked that they’re trying to sell their extremely cumbersome CSS customizable option (yes, my Mom paid extra for the option, and no they won’t let me alter simple html instead) using my work.  I mean, sheesh, I frankly could have built the site from the ground up faster than I could get the site to look the way I wanted it to using CSS, except for that the wordpress server wouldn’t have supported it.  Still, it feels pretty cool that someone out there recognizes my work as worth using as an example.  If anything, I’m good at problem solving, and I can wrestle with a pre-existing system until I get my own way with it.  In any case, please enjoy this shameless plug for my graphic design abilities and my mom’s website.  If you click the logo, it’ll take you straight there!  Have a great day- E.G.D.

Living the Dream!

January 28, 2013

It has been a very long time since someone paid me to act.  Well, at least unless one is prepared to include scholarships granted to me for a theatrical master’s degree, which probably should count for something.  My point is, I had started to poke my nose into (and apply to jobs for) professional technical theatre and theatrical design, and I have for a long time pursued teaching positions in the field.  It makes me laugh at myself to now announce that my first seriously theatre related job since graduating with an MFA in theatre performance is honest to goodness theatre performance.  Who’d have guessed?  I was just offered and immediately accepted a job working for Mad Science Houston as an actor in a one woman show that will be sent to schools and events to teach kids of all ages about the glories and wonders of science.  I have not been this excited about a new job since the JET Programme hired me to teach high school English in Japan back in 2005.  On top of that, I have been called back for a completely unrelated professional acting position, and callbacks are very happy things for actors (even ones who have just landed potentially long term jobs with mind-blowingly awesome educational organizations).  Apparently 30 (I had a birthday on Wednesday) is a very auspicious age for me ^_^.  Heck, I’m a mature and exceptionally well trained actor, and it shouldn’t surprise me nearly as much as it does that I feel like I can really nail an audition now.  And with results!  Glorious, glorious results.  Now, I’m not saying I plan to stop here.  I’m going to keep auditioning, and if anyone out there wants to send a technical theatre or theatre design job my way, I am still game for just about anything.  I do, however, feel like I am 0ne giant leap closer to living the actor/performer dream.  Onward and upward! Wooohoooo!  Cheers, and I hope everyone out there has as awesome a day as mine- E.G.D.

Experimentation with Animation

January 13, 2013

Well, I downloaded Muvizu on Friday, and I had Shakespeare on the brain because I auditioned for the Houston Shakespeare Festival yesterday, so I decided to attempt to animate the prologue of Henry V (which any of you who have read the “intro” page on this site have probably guessed is among my favorite Shakespeare plays).  Now, I have to say, I would make all of NONE of these physical acting choices, but at my current skill level with this animation software, this was the best I could do without driving myself crazy nitpicking.  Also, this isn’t my best vocal performance of this soliloquy.  I chose this recording because the audio was clearest, and it wasn’t as breathy and crackly as the others.  My microphone is not good, and even this level of clarity was preferable to that of the others.  Working with what I had, I don’t think the result is awful, but I reserve the right to change my mind at any moment.  I hope you enjoy it!

Maybe someday I’ll actually be good at this.  In the meantime, I’ll settle ^_^. -E.G.D.

Years and Years of Crazy E-Cards

January 3, 2013
tags: , ,

Sooooooo, starting in 2003, I’ve sent my friends and family hand-made e-cards every year in honor of various holidays (most consistently Christmas).  Some of them feature the characters from a web-comic I drew in my undergraduate years, but most of them feature some version of me.  For fun, and because I thought it might be a selling point to potential employers that I am reasonably good with art software, I am posting a selection of these e-cards.  I hope you enjoy them! -E.G.D.

This Year’s Holiday E-Card (©Elisa Grace Diehl 2012)

Every year, I hand-make a bizarre and quirky holiday e-card to send to my family and friends.  I have been doing this for a decade, now, which is a crazy thought.  Anyhow, this year I thought I’d toss it up on my website as A) a holiday greeting and B) proof that I’m competent with art software ^_^.  Maybe after the holiday rush slows down a bit, I’ll post a gallery of all the crazy holiday cards of years past to show a sort of series progression.

In the meantime, Happy Holidays, Feliz Navidad, and Mele Kalikimaka!  -E.G.D.
