I took a new series of headshots today, and I have come to the conclusion that the best light for portraits happens outside and just before a great big thunderstorm. Now, if only I could get my printer to print this without weird stripes of lighter color down the front… Anyhow, enjoy! -E.G.D.

Theatre Person Seeking Work (the eternal story)

Would anyone out there like to hire a competent and well-rounded theatre person? The only theatre position at which I do not believe I could perform well is head electrician. Actually, I’m also only a mediocre scenic designer, and I’ve only ever designed lights with a pre-fixed lighting grid, but I’m a fair hand at most everything else, and I am absolutely invaluable during strike (bring on the heavy lifting and the power tools!!). I act, produce, direct, design, stage manage, and work tech/crew with comparable verve, and I’m even skilled at things like web design and office filing. I write decent plays. While we’re at it, I’ve been told I’m an excellent teacher, though I consider teaching a secondary passion to theatre. I’d take a job teaching theatre, certainly, especially if I could produce, direct, or perform on the side.

Basically, now that I’ve graduated (again), I could really use an outlet, and the market for theatre jobs is a little… saturated may be the best way to describe it. I’ll admit, this perceived difficulty may have something to do with the fact that I’m job-searching from Albuquerque, NM. I’ve decided that if I am not hired soon, I’m going to find a place with a good professional theatre community, move there, and audition until I drop. The hard part is deciding where to go when employment options are so very uncertain world-wide.

I offer myself and my skills up to the theatrical universe. I’m ready to move, and I’m ready to work creatively and well for a theatre in need of my services. Here’s crossing my fingers and knocking on wood, and if you’d like to point me in a promising direction, I would be very much obliged. -E.G.D.

The Joys of Late June

ZOOM! I graduated just a tiny bit more than a month ago, and let me tell you, time flies. Thus far, I have been let-down-easy for a couple of paid internships, and I am currently helping out on a voluntary basis at the Ambassador Theater in Washington DC. At the moment, that particular position entails a lot of editing paperwork, a bit of graphic design, and some publicity related creative writing. On the acting front, I just auditioned at the annual Albuquerque Theatre Guild general audition and renewed my (two years lapsed) membership. On the producing front, The Black Box Black Blocks Theatre and Dance Festival of New Works is opening this Thursday, and if you are in Honolulu this week, I encourage you to go! It makes me a little bit sad that I won’t be able to see the third season, even though I’ve put a great deal of time and effort into producing it. I can say with great confidence that it will be a heck of an enjoyable show, and I expect to eventually see a DVD.

Note: I somehow have my hands up to the elbows in theatrical works in three extremely different parts of this country. Isn’t that crazy? Ah, the wonders of the internet…

Black Box in Progress!

Aloha, visitors! I now have a piece of paper declaring me an expert! Three cheers for graduation and job hunting, and here’s hoping something wonderful turns up. In the meantime, Black Box Black Blocks is still in progress, and I am remotely producing it this year. This may be even crazier than my usual production stunt-work, but it seems to be working, and the festival will be opening in late June. Time Slip!

Wow, it’s been too long since I have updated this site! Since last time, the second season of Black Box was a great success, I composed and performed a violin score for a production of Hamlet (in which I also played the part of Osric), and I trained for and performed in a Kabuki play called The Vengeful Sword. Now, I will shortly be graduating with an MFA in Asian Theatre! Also, the third season of Black Box is underway, and the selection process is going pretty well.

Perhaps most importantly (because you can still make it if you want to come!), I will be performing the role of the Wolf in a production of Little Red Riding Hood at the Earle Ernst Lab on May 3ed at 6:00 PM and May 4th at 4:00 PM. It is a free show, and we’d all be happy to see you there! Also, several other one-act plays (all fused with Asian theatrical elements) will be happening as part of the same program, and they are likely to be a lot of fun.

May is a Big Month (so is June)

May is fast approaching, and it will be a very busy month in the life of one E.G.D. First of all, I am very deeply involved in the Brecht in/and Asia Conference 2010, which is taking place at UHM this May, and I am also participating in Coyote Con and May WriMo (sponsored by Drollerie Press, which publishes two of my novels). I’m also in the thick of the middle-stages of organizing the second annual Black Box Black Blocks theatre and dance festival of new short works, which will open in June. With luck, I’ll be able to strike a nice balance between theatre and fiction writing this late-spring. Anyhow, many of these things are free and open to the public! Up and Coming: The White Snake

I have recently been informed (just in time for dress rehearsals) that I have five costumes in this production. I’m like a supernatural-Chinese fashion plate! Anyhow, The White Snake (a Jingju/Beijing Opera production in English) at the University of Hawaii Kennedy Theatre is likely to be the Honolulu theatrical event of the decade. I absolutely guarantee that the eye-popping fight scene spectaculars will leave even the most stoic audience thrilled, and it’s a truly remarkable cultural opportunity.
